Those Without Health Insurance Up Nationwide – But Down in Some States – Census
[10/16/07]
Recent census data set off an alarm when it reported that Nationwide the number of Americans without health insurance had once again risen,. However some States did not fit that profile. In fact in several states the numbers of those without health insurance actually went down, against the national average.

On such notable State is Connecticut. In The Constitution State according to the census the numbers of residents without healthcare insurance dropped to around 9%, from 11% last year. The executive director of the Connecticut Health Policy Project, a non-profit advocacy group for more affordable health insurance coverage said the change was significant.

The group says the findings indicate that when it comes to affordable health insurance in the State of Connecticut things are improving. However the Director is quick to point out that census figures can also be deceiving. The numbers indicate that more people in the state are now covered by health insurance than there were the year before. However closer analysis of the numbers is required to get a clearer picture. For example while the numbers show that more residents now have health insurance, what the raw data does not show is where they are getting that coverage from. In fact it may be that fewer people are actually purchasing private health insurance polices, and more people are enrolling in Government sponsored healthcare insurance programs like Medicaid.

Last year of the 3 million people in the state with health insurance coverage, 2 million had private healthcare insurance either purchased on their own or through an employer. Around 950,000 residents obtained their health insurance through government funded programs. How those numbers break out in the new data, remains to be seen.

Still on the surface, anything that indicates that more people are gaining access to affordable health insurance either through private health insurance companies or the public sector is perceived as a step in the right direction.
