Middle Class Working Families Fastest Growing Group Among the Uninsured.

Many people in this country are feeling the squeeze when it comes to finding affordable health insurance. Small and large businesses alike are facing constantly rising costs for heath insurance coverage. But perhaps no group is feeling the pinch more than the middle class.

A recent survey found that nearly one-third of the over 46 million Americans without health insurance earn over $40,000. This problem is particularly acute for older workers who have perhaps faced lay-offs or cuts in health insurance benefits, and now cannot afford to purchase private health insurance, or have pre-existing conditions that make it nearly impossible for them to find an affordable health insurance plan, for themselves and their families.

For many who find themselves looking for individual health insurance for the first time, after being covered under an employer sponsored group health insurance plan for years there can be a significant amount of sticker shock. These are individuals who may have paid little or nothing for health benefits for years, and are suddenly faced with costs that could reach into the thousands of dollars monthly.

But experts agree that it doesn’t have to be that way, while several proposals are in play to try to bring about affordable health coverage for all Americans, the private health insurance market is becoming more competitive, and while rates do vary from state to state, there are bargains to be found, no matter where you live.

First off shop around and become an educated consumer. There are many websites that offer comparative prices and free quotes on health insurance. Use them. There are also many websites that offer very good information about health insurance options, and answer questions about the different kinds of affordable medical policies available, the various types of plans, and explain relatively new products such as High Deductible Low Premium Plans and Health Savings Accounts.

And finally, health insurance and medical professionals agree that the best way to reduce health insurance costs is to get healthy and stay healthy. Quit smoking, lose a few pounds, participate in health, wellness and preventive medicine programs, and you can significantly reduce the costs of a private healthcare insurance policy if you are now among the growing number of individuals who find themselves in the market for one.
