Health Insurance can be confusing. And today with so many different options available and many changes occurring on an almost a daily basis, finding what you need to know to obtain affordable health insurance is more complex than ever.

With backing of the its Governor Bob Riley, Alabama’s Department of Public Health has launched a consumer friendly website that was designed to answer questions about health insurance and breach what has been called the “knowledge deficit” among consumers.

The site is an educational tool that has been implemented to help consumers learn about health insurance terminology, understand tax breaks and incentives, and find resources. Dr. Don Williamson with the Alabama Department of Health said “We applaud this initiative because the Web site will provide Alabamians practical guidance in selecting the best health insurance for their needs and will provide them the protection they need for themselves, their families and their employees."

Local Congressmen applaud the Governors efforts and believe the site is a great step forward when it comes to educating both the working public and employers on the best options available for affordable health insurance.

The site, http://healthinsurance.alabama.gov/ was developed after surveys found there was a growing need for understanding health insurance in general and how to find low-cost medical insurance options among the uninsured in the state. The site represents a way that the Government and public agencies can meet this need without occurring additional costs.

The site is very user friendly, can be accessed from any computer either at home, at a library or the offices of the Department of Public Health. The site gives consumers information about recourses and options for affordable and low-cost medical insurance. There is specific information regarding health insurance options for the self-employed, large and small businesses, and what consumers need to know about COBRA and AHIP when leaving a job.

The website also features a tax calculator that can show consumers how much money they may save in tax breaks with the purchase of an affordable individual health insurance policy.
